Gishwati Mukura National Park
Gishwati-Mukura National Park is Rwanda’s newest national park, where an ambitious long-term conservation project is underway to reconnect fragmented natural forests. Located along the Congo-Nile watershed, between two of the world’s major river basins, these forests once formed a continuous ecological corridor linking Nyungwe Forest in the south to the Virunga Volcanoes in northern Rwanda.Gishwati is known for its rich wildlife, including a community of about 20 chimpanzees living alongside golden monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and blue monkeys. Birdlife is equally remarkable, with over 230 bird species recorded in Gishwati and more than 160 in Mukura, including several Albertine Rift endemic species and specialized forest birds.
